Parco Oglio Sud
Oglio Sud Park extends along the river banks of the lower course of the Oglio river, from the Mella river inflow down to where the river flows into the Po, for a total of about 70 km.
Oglio Sud Park extends along the lower reaches of the Oglio River from the tributary of the Mella River to the mouth of the Po River, a total of about 70 km. The landscape of the nature park is highly anthropized, with a succession of cultivated fields, interrupted by rows and wetlands in floodplain areas, surrounded by natural vegetation and aquatic wildlife. The floodplain areas are evident in the countryside, given the extensive wooded cover of poplars and for the dense white willow borders, that sometimes extend to form true thickets. The riverbed has a meandering course, with clear meanders and often steep banks, which become small beaches in summer as the water level drops.
The Park’s vocation is to conserve the natural heritage and furthermore to act as a laboratory for sustainable development and restoration of the river landscape in its natural and cultural components. In view of the need to enrich the park’s forests, we have prepared interventions to improve the area. We will plant new trees to reforest and expand the existing forests. Then, given the structure of the park, we will work on rebuilding the vegetation continuity along the river banks. In fact, progressively restoring naturalness to the riverbanks means ensuring that they are more efficient as an ecological system and more attractive to both residents and visitors.
This project is co-funded by the Lombardy Region’s Biodiversity and Climate Call (BioClima) and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. Bioclima is an initiative created within the framework of the Lombardy Plan and the LIFE GESTIRE 2020 project that aims to create public-private financing models to catalyze investment in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.
