Along the shores of Mantua’s lakes we find the Periurban Park, which is the green lung of the city. This forest, inaugurated in 1995, spans three lakefronts – Upper, Lower and Middle – from which the entire city can be seen. Today it is a popular space for nature lovers, thanks to its kiosks, picnic areas, health trails and bike paths.
The forest located along Middle Lake represents a part of this park that continues to grow through new improvements. Crisscrossed by a system of bicycle and pedestrian paths, it is a popular space for citizens who come here to play sports, take walks and enjoy nature. Growing new trees in Mantua means leaving a positive mark on one of Italy’s UNESCO World Heritage cities. It helps to improve air quality by absorbing CO2 and reducing particulate matter and to have milder temperatures. It also creates new habitats for local wildlife, increasing biodiversity and making the city more resilient to climate change. A regenerated green area, such as the Peri-urban Park, becomes a space of sociality and well-being for those who live there, providing a safe and welcoming place to walk, play sports or relax.
Over the last few years, important interventions have been carried out in the area as part of the Mn – My Nature project. In line with the strategic objective “Environment and territory” of the programming of the Cariverona Foundation, and in line with the objectives outlined by the Habitat call, the Mn – My Nature project focuses on the protection of the regeneration and valorisation of the natural heritage of the Municipality of Mantua .
