Events in Lombardy: plant a tree at Spina Verde Park, Como

Adopt a tree for biodiversity
Spina Verde Park, with its varied and rich landscapes, is a valuable ecosystem that is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. By planting trees, we help maintain and enhance this biodiversity, creating vital habitats for numerous plant and animal species. Each adopted tree becomes part of a larger forest that supports life in all its forms.
How to participate in the event
Plan a weekend in nature and enjoy the beauty of Lake Como as seen from above. If you have always wanted to actively contribute to environmental protection, adopt a tree with WOWnature and you will receive an invitation to come and plant it in person on Saturday, April 20 at 2:30 p.m.
The event
The event will open at 2:30 pm with a walk that will take us to the green heart of Spina Verde Park. At 3 p.m., we will find out the details of the project and who is supporting it, followed by the much anticipated planting time at 3:30 p.m. There will then be an interactive amphibian activity with prizes, scheduled for 4:30 p.m., which promises to be as educational as it is fun. The event will conclude at 5:00 p.m., at which time we will return to the parking lot.
Spina Verde Park
The Spina Verde Park is an exceptional ecological corridor stretching from east to west, in contrast to many other north-south oriented protected areas in Lombardy. This geographical uniqueness makes it a home for a vast biodiversity, including numerous animals and plants. It is recognised as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for monitoring numerous animal species. In addition, the park has a ‘cultural’ side with important historical remains, such as Castel Baradello. The spectacular views of Lake Como and the Swiss mountains capture the hearts of visitors, making the Spina Verde Park an ideal place for lovers of nature, history and scenic beauty.
Goals of the reforestation project
Preserving biodiversity, supporting the management of the forest and improving its accessibility to people are our goals. The interventions include actions to clean the forest from dry vegetation and plant native trees to counter the spread of exotic and pest species. In addition, we will restore existing wetlands and create a pond to preserve and enhance essential habitats for the amphibians that populate the Spina Verde Park.
All in all, we will regenerate no less than 36 hectares of forest in need of new trees. In addition, we have great news. We will open a small nursery for the self-production of native plants (trees, shrubs and grasses) to be used in the ecological redevelopments carried out by the Park. In doing so, Spina Verde will play an essential role in providing services that we often take for granted: carbon capture, groundwater recharge, pollutant retention, soil conservation, and the maintenance of a healthy environment for recreation and well-being.
BioClima
This project is co-financed by the Lombardy Region’s “Biodiversity and Climate” (BioClima) call for proposals and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. Bioclima is an initiative created in the framework of the Lombardy Plan and the LIFE GESTIRE 2020 project that aims to create public-private financing models to catalyse investments in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.
