Forests created or improved Portegrandi Forest
Why did we support this forest?
The Portegrandi Forest, located near Venice and the Sile River, is a project that transforms an uncultivated area into a forest rich in biodiversity. With about 800 native plants planted imitating the natural conformation of a forest, it will be a vital refuge for wildlife and pollinating insects.
History of the forest
Just 20 kilometres from Venice, among cultivated fields and canals, a new forest is emerging: Bosco Portegrandi. Located in the heart of the Po Valley, in an area that has long been left uncultivated, it is now set to become a habitat teeming with biodiversity. Its proximity to the River Sile and its strategic position between agricultural and natural areas make this the perfect spot to restore nature to an area that has been neglected for too long.
The project originates from the desire to develop a true forest ecosystem, inspired by the ancient oak and hornbeam forests that once covered these lands. This initiative has been made possible through support from the Municipality of Quarto d’Altino and the European Union, as part of the Life ClimatePositive Project.

How we improved the forest
Bosco Portegrandi will host around 800 native plants arranged in a pattern that mimics the natural, spontaneous distribution of a forest. The chosen species will grow in a diverse and unpredictable way, creating a varied and complex environment capable of supporting a wide range of life: pollinating insects, birds, small mammals, and many other organisms essential for maintaining the area’s balance. Along the edges of the forest, strips of native shrubs will serve as buffer zones between the new forest and the surrounding agricultural areas, easing the transition between habitats and providing additional shelter for wildlife. Besides being a green oasis, the forest is designed to maximise ecosystem services: CO₂ absorption, microclimate regulation, soil preservation, pollination, and more. It is a small forest with great potential, capable of making a real contribution to fighting climate change and creating a healthier, more livable landscape.
