Forests created or improved Spina Verde Park
Why did we support this forest?
This stretch of nature covers more than a thousand hectares from the Como hills to the Swiss border, sprawling like a spine from east to west. Its reputation is mainly due to the historical ruins preserved inside, which have given it the attribute of a “cultural” park. The project plans to re-thicken and enhance the forest cover, including the opening of a nursery for self-grown native plants.
History of the forest
The Spina Verde Regional Park in Como is a precious green lung close to the city, blending nature and culture in one area. It is home to significant historical remains, such as protohistoric sites, World War I trenches, and a medieval tower. It also plays an important role in the environmental health of nearby communities. Over the years, the park has become central to sustainable tourism, public health, and efforts to combat climate change. Today, to continue providing these benefits, it is essential to strengthen its ecological resilience and boost biodiversity.

How we improved the forest
Thanks to the project, we have restored the woods of Cardano, Baradello, and Monte Olimpino by replacing unstable or diseased trees and removing invasive species like black locust. Native broadleaf trees have been replanted, and the undergrowth has been enriched with herbaceous species to create more diverse habitats. The wetlands of Monte Olimpino have also been enhanced, restoring a small waterfall and creating new ponds for rare amphibians such as Lataste’s frog and the crested newt. Additionally, a nursery for native plants has been established. New nature trails and educational activities complete the project, bringing more people closer to nature.
This project is co-funded by the Call for Proposals “Biodiversity and Climate” (BioClima) implemented by Regione Lombardia and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. Bioclima, created under the LIFE GESTIRE 2020 project, aims to create public-private financing models to catalyze investment in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.
