On the night of October 29, 2018, a wind of unprecedented strength swept over the territories of northeastern Italy: it was the Vaia storm, a phenomenon of exceptional intensity that will be remembered as one of the greatest tragedies for Italian forests, as it felled more than 42 million trees in just a few minutes. On that occasion, the city of Feltre also suffered extensive damage, as so many ancient trees were felled by the merciless force of the storm. Among them was the forest that had always been a companion to the students of Istituto di Istruzione Superiore “A. Della Lucia” in Vellai (Vellai’s “A. Della Lucia” Higher Education Institute). But on rubble you can rebuild, from destruction you can be reborn: thus, thanks to the initiative “a tree for every newborn” supported by the City of Feltre and to the people of the WOWnature community, 300 new trees have now been planted on that land. Trees that will grow and become a forest, providing room for the educational activities of students.
