In October of 2018, this forest was almost completely wiped out by storm Vaia. Relentless winds left behind nothing but destruction, and it must have been impossible not to feel fragile, small, and at the mercy of events during that horrific night. No one in the affected areas will ever forget storm Vaia. Thanks to the project supported by MAW and Crédit Agricole FriulAdria, the area was cleared and secured, removing felled trees and planting 2,500 trees, covering an area of 3 hectares, so that the forest can once again thrive and protect the underlying road. Reforestation works were carried out on a forest area with an important landscape and hydro-geological protection role, located in the hamlet of Lerpa, at the entrance of Sappada (UD).
This is a mountain resort located at the eastern end of the Dolomites on the border between Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Austria. To increase the forest’s ability to withstand extreme events, young trees of different species well-suited to local conditions have been planted: spruce, fir, larch, beech, maple. As these trees grow, they will form the perfect habitat for the many animals that inhabit the surrounding area; trees that, being right on the outskirts of Sappada village, will serve an important role in improving the existing landscape.
